I've looked online for the recommended and/or preferred treatments for a Springfield M1A walnut stock, and have seen numerous opinions and options. One poster wrote to Springfield and apparently received a reply indicating that they recommend 100% pure Tung Oil.

Walnut big reds are the most rare pattern of wood USGI M14 stocks (other than match stocks) The United States was running out of walnut as the M14 stock was being redesigned - birch was being phased in, so most of the "big reds" are birch.
